Franco de Courten was born in la Spezia, Italy, in 1932. He started to paint at the age of 14 and never stopped, continuing to do so constantly throughout his life. Even across the more than thirty years during which when he held demanding and very responsible positions, never did he cease to paint. Today he lives in Rome and dedicates his life full time to art and to his artistic activities.

His job lead him to spend very long periods in Mediterranean and Equatorial Africa (Algeria and Angola), as well as in the Middle East (Israel and Jordan) and in various European nations (Yugoslavia, Austria, Switzerland and Holland).

His works very often reflect his life story, especially his oil paintings which are grouped into collections and which he painted as he relived or remembered the places and the environments he knew. As for his collages, known as his 'Carte', photographs, calligraphies and pictures from different sources often serve as his starting point.

In 2003, Rubettino published his "Diario di Algeria (1996-1998)" (Diary of Algeria).

In 2004, EDITALIA published  "Incantesimi", 49 works on paper on the charms of the ancient world (with Paolo Sabbatini Rancidoro).

In 2005, The 49 original works "Incantesimi" (Charms), painting and calligraphy on paper, and the book of artist with the same name, published by EDITALIA, in which they are splendidly reproduced and commented, are exhibited at the Nomi Gallery of Saint Petersburg from November 28 to December 15
